Hi! I'm Konstantina Soura and I live in beautiful Patras, Greece. I’m an archaeologist and a ceramic artist, so I’ve been either studying ceramics or working with clay for most of my life. Ever since my academic studies, my life has been wrapped up in the beauty of clay and the fascinating stories it holds.
But my heart truly beats for the moment when I can bring the inspiration I get from the study of lost civilisations into the present. It’s like having one foot in the past and the other in the future, constantly merging history with modern creativity to create something completely new and exciting!
Working with clay? Oh, it’s pure magic! My hands love the feel of it—everything I create is handbuilt, whether I’m using coil building or slab techniques. I mostly work with stoneware, but there’s something special about raw or burnished surfaces that always pulls me back in. And experimenting? That's my jam! I’m all about playing with slips, oxides, and glazes to see where the clay takes me.
But ceramics isn’t my only creative playground. I also paint and dabble in all sorts of crafts. Sometimes I mix it all up to create something truly unique and, well, totally me! Sustainability is super important to me too, so I always stick to natural materials. I guess you could say I’m always crafting something—my hands just can’t stay still, and my brain? It’s always buzzing with new ideas!
Being also an archaeologist, I’ve been studying ancient ceramics and unearthing the secrets of past civilizations for a really long time. The prehistory and history of my country, as well as the ceramic traditions of other cultures, become an endless source of inspiration, whether consciously or subconsciously, bringing a tactile connection to the past into my contemporary work. I’m particularly drawn to the simplicity and beauty of primitive forms, the raw textures of natural clays and the exciting possibilities offered by alternative firing techniques.
But my inspiration doesn’t stop there. The natural world speaks to me deeply. I am constantly fascinated by the textures and forms of rocks, pebbles and seeds. The earthy tones, the raw, unpolished surfaces, and the organic shapes found in nature all influence my work.
